What is a sticky key?

Every keyboard has modifier keys, which affect letter key actions. You use shift most of the time. Sometimes, when the sticky keys are turned off, you have to hold Shift while pressing the 8 key to get an asterisk.

Sticky keys help with either disability or repetitive strain injuries. Turning this feature on essentially locks the key in pressed state so that you can use shortcut keys one key at a time.

Returning to the Asterisk example, holding Shift, releasing it, and then typing 8 to enter the asterisk will show the sticky key is on, so any other shortcut using the Ctrl, Alt, or Windows keys will follow the same pattern.

Windows Sticky Keys can be useful if you want to keep the keys down for a while. This can be useful if you’re learning how to use the software and rely on keys that can be changed when you find the key you want to strike, or if you’re not a touch-typist. Otherwise, quitting is not beneficial for you.

  • Searching the Start menu is the fastest way to open the Control Panel.
  • Go to Ease of Access > Ease of Access Center > Make the keyboard to use.
  • Here you can clear the Enable Sticky Keys checkbox.
  • Request savings.
